The iconic Broel Towers are the only remainders of Kortrijk's oldest fortifications. The southern ‘Speytorre’ was built in 1385 to control shipping traffic on the River Lys and also formed part of the fortifications of the Counts of Flanders’ castle. The northern ‘Inghelburghtorre’ from 1415 served as an arms depot and was equipped with cannons.
Both towers were built out of sandstone and limestone. The Broelbrug bridge originally dates back to 1385. It has been destroyed and reconstructed several times. Together, the towers and the bridge constitute a unique and attractive site near the heart of the city.
